Trips
Two types of trip…
Coaches
A group of up to 15 youth team coaches, from Scottish grassroots clubs and SPFL Community and Academy clubs
These coaches organise and deliver a series of football sessions in Rwanda, for kids of all ages, gender and ability
Youth players and coaches
A group of up to 16 young Scottish footballers (boys and girls), age 16 years (end of S5) PLUS up to 4 experienced youth team coaches
The players will assist the coaches, helping to set up and demonstrate the football sessions, and integrating with the young Rwandan players
The basic details
Below are the basic things you need to know about our trips. However….
“Guys, there’s been a change of plan” has been a common theme on previous trips to Rwanda, so everything is subject to change…
Itinerary
Afternoons are for football. We split our coaches into two groups:
One delivers a session for a Youth squad from a Rwanda Premier football club such as Rayon Sports or AS Kigali;
The other group with a community project, charity or school, which can be a lot more chaotic. Coaches will take part in both groups during the week
Mornings are for discovering Rwanda’s history and culture…we’ll visit genocide memorials, and spend time at community projects such as a disabled school and a home for ex-street kids
If possible we’ll also take in a Premier League match
Most of the trip is spent in the capital, Kigali. We’ll also spend 2 days in the West of Rwanda, at Lake Kivu
Costs and admin
In total each trip can accommodate up to 15 volunteers
If trips are over-subscribed, we may opt for coaches with a minimum 1.3 SFA qualifications
We ask each coach to fundraise and donate approx £2,000, which can be donated over a period of 6-9 months before the trip.
In addition, we encourage another donation of £250 that will be 100% passed on by us directly to the projects and schools that your group visits
We will organise your travel - flights, accommodation, meals (excluding alcohol, you’ll pay for your own beer), travel around Rwanda and entrance to genocide memorials etc. Your group will be accompanied by a charity rep who will be your trip manager and guide
Individual travel Insurance, entry visas and vaccinations are not included and are usually the responsibility of each volunteer to organise for themselves before the trip
Any gift aid that the charity claims from donations will be used to cover any running costs and to build up a small reserve fund (as recommended by OSCR) for emergencies
Our Scottish team are all volunteers - no salary or expenses - though we do pay our Rwandan guides, coaches and translators
